The Los Angeles Angels have announced that third baseman Anthony Rendon will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a right hip impingement. Rendon, 31, has been limited by an array of injuries throughout the 2021 season and has batted an uncharacteristic .240/.329/.382 for the Angels this year with six home runs in 58 games. The Angels signed him to a seven-year, $245 million deal ahead of the abbreviated 2020 season.
Overall, he's batted .261/.372/.436 since signing with the Angels with 15 home runs and 24 doubles in 110 games. Surely frustrating for Rendon and the club is that the two-time Silver Slugger had been mostly healthy in the four seasons prior to leaving the Nationals for the Angels.
In Rendon's absence, Jack Mayfield figures to continue as the Angels' primary at third base, at least for the time being.
As well, Angels manager Joe Maddon also told reporters that the team still doesn't know when star center fielder Mike Trout's right calf strain will allow him to be activated. He's been sidelined since May 17, and Maddon hinted at the possibility that Trout will not play again in 2021.

Despite the fact that two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is the AL MVP frontrunner, the Angels enter play on Wednesday one game below .500 and in fourth place in the AL West. In the race for the second and final AL wild card berth, the Angels are 6 1/2 games out and behind five teams. Related to all that, the SportsLine Projection System presently gives the Angels just a 1.7 percent chance of making the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Had Trout and Rendon been healthier, the Halos might be in the thick of things right now.
