Canada to host next window of FIBA World Cup 2023 qualifiers in Edmonton

The Canadian men’s national basketball team will have a chance to clinch a spot in the 2023 FIBA World Cup on home soil.

Canada Basketball announced Tuesday that the fifth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers will be played in Edmonton this November.

Canada, the only undefeated team in the Americas sitting at 8-0 in Group E, will face Venezuela on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 9:10 p.m. ET before hosting on Panama Sunday, Nov. 13 at 7:10 p.m. ET. Both games will be held at the Edmonton Expo Centre and broadcast live on Sportsnet.

Canada hosted a game on home soil at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria on Aug. 25 during the fourth window against Argentina, and also hosted a game in Hamilton at FirstOntario Centre on July 1.

Canada, ranked 15th in the world by the FIBA World Rankings, looks to clinch a World Cup berth on home soil topping Group E. In the standings they are followed by this window’s first opponent Venezuela (7-1), then Argentina (6-2), Dominican Republic (5-3), Panama (2-6), and Bahamas (2-6).

The 12 teams who advanced past the first phase of qualifiers were divided into two groups, Group E and Group F, and the three best teams in each group and the best fourth-place team will move on to the World Cup.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, set to take place from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10, 2023, will be hosted by the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia and feature 32 teams. The final phase will be in the Philippines’ capital city of Manila.
