Matt Chapman trade: Toronto Blue Jays acquire third baseman as Oakland A's fire sale continues

As soon as the MLB lockout ended, the Oakland Athletics resumed their fire sale by shipping first baseman Matt Olson to the Atlanta Braves, effectively ruling last season's World Series champions out of the sweepstakes for their star veteran Freddie Freeman.

On Wednesday, Oakland struck reached an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade that will send third baseman Matt Chapman north of the border, CBS Sports HQ's Jim Bowden confirms. According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Blue Jays are not giving up players from their projected Opening Day roster.

In light of Anthony Rizzo re-signing with the Yankees and the Blue Jays getting Chapman, the race for Freeman is down to the Rays, Red Sox, Padres and Dodgers, according to Bowden.

CBS Sports will continue to update this breaking news story as necessary.
