As thousands gathered for memorial services in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, a simple yet sombre message flooded social media: Never forget.
On Sept. 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked by Al-Qaida operatives crashing into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, another diving into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the fourth crashing into a field in Pennsylvania. That day, 2,977 lost their lives including 24 Canadians.
The sports world will take some time to look back and recognize the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with various leagues and teams holding on-field tributes, ceremonies and performances on Saturday.
To honour the memory of the victims that lost their lives, the New York Yankees and Mets will mark the 20th anniversary of the attacks before Saturday night's Subway Series game. They will wear caps from the New York City Police Department, Fire Department of the City of New York, Port Authority Police Department and New York City Department of Correction to honour first responders.
Many teams have already posted messages on social media with the #NeverForget hashtag front and centre in their tributes.
