The Red Sox announced Monday morning that they have picked up contract options for both 2023 and 2024 for manager Alex Cora.
"Alex's leadership of our staff and our players was critical to all that we accomplished in 2021," chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said in a statement. "Along with the entire Red Sox front office, I am excited for many years of continued partnership as we work together to bring another World Series trophy to Fenway Park."
Cora, 46, was the Red Sox manager in 2018, when the Red Sox won 108 regular-season games and then the World Series, and then 2019. He was suspended for 2020 in the wake for his involvement with the Astros' sign-stealing scandal -- he was Houston's bench coach in 2017. The Red Sox and Cora mutually agreed to part ways before the 2020 season.
After a 24-36 2020 season with manager Ron Roenicke, the Red Sox decided to bring Cora back for 2021. They ended up exceeding expectations, going 92-70, winning the Wild Card Game over the Yankees and taking out the 100-win Rays in the ALDS before losing to the Astros in the ALCS.
"I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to manage the Red Sox," Cora said in a statement. "We experienced so many special moments as a team and as a city in 2021, but we still have unfinished business to take care of. I am excited about the current state of our organization and eager to continue my work with our front office, coaches, players, and everyone who makes this such a special place."
