The deal is reportedly record-setting, making Hammon the highest-paid WNBA head coach.
Hammon is coming from the San Antonio Spurs, where she was the first full-time female assistant coach in the NBA. Her tenure with the Spurs lasted since 2014, where she’s filled in for head coach Gregg Popovich in his absence, acting as interim head coach.
Before her coaching career, Hammon spent 16 seasons in the WNBA. Starting her career with New York Liberty (1999-2006) and then the San Antonio Stars (2007-2014), Hammon is one of the WNBA’s all-time great players. She’s a six-time all-star, two-time All-WNBA First Team, two-time All-WNBA Second Team, and the WNBA’s assists leader in 2007.
The Las Vegas Aces finished first in the WNBA’s western conference in 2021 with a 24-8 record. However, the Aces lost in the first round of the WNBA Playoffs to the Phoenix Mercury in five games.
The Aces open the 2022 WNBA season on May 6, 2022 against the Mercury.
