Jamaal Lascelles returned to the starting XI to captain NewcastleA much-changed Newcastle United side came from behind to beat League Two club Tranmere Rovers and reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Buoyed from their impressive draw with Manchester City in the Premier League, Newcastle controlled the game but fell behind when Elliott Nevitt was teed up.
The hosts frustrated Newcastle before captain Jamaal Lascelles, playing on with a broken nose, made it 1-1.
Substitute Kieran Trippier's corner was headed in by Chris Wood for the winner.
Eddie Howe made 10 changes from Sunday's draw but was dealt an early blow when Emil Krafth was taken off on a stretcher, replaced by Trippier, and returned to the bench in the second half wearing a boot and with crutches.
However, Lascelles used the opportunity to make his mark given the stiff competition he faces to earn a starting place in defence, reacting quickly to his initially-blocked effort to fire in the rebound for his goal.
It came 19 minutes after Josh Dacres-Cogley was chipped in behind to set-up Nevitt, the former non-league striker who only turned professional last year when he joined Tranmere.
Newcastle improved in the second half with Wood, Sven Botman and Joe Willock coming close, while Tranmere defender Kyle Jameson was perhaps fortunate to be shown just a yellow card for a late tackle on goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
Micky Mellon's side continued to battle and enjoyed spells of pressure late on but Newcastle held firm to retain their unbeaten start in all competitions this season.
Tributes were also paid in the ninth minute as fans applauded in support for the family of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel, shot at her home in Liverpool on Monday night.
