England's Charley Hull started strongly at the Women's British Open at Woburn in her bid to win a first major title.
Hull, 23, shot a five-under-par 67 on her home course, two shots adrift of the clubhouse leader Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa.
Japan's Hinako Shibuno and Danielle Kang of the USA sit one shot behind Buhai on six under.
Hull's compatriot Georgia Hall began her title defence with a bogey-free first-round 69.
The 23-year-old won her first major last year by two shots at Royal Lytham & St Annes ahead of Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum.
"I would have taken a bogey-free round at the start," Bournemouth-born Hall said.
"I'm happy and I played really well - I walked on that tee and it took me back to last year and I'm excited to be playing at home and have that support around me."
South Korea's world number one Ko Jin-young, who is bidding for a third successive major title, finished in touch of the lead with a four-under-par 68.
Four-time major champion Laura Davies, 55, had a first round to forget after finishing with a 10-over-par 83 and now faces a battle to make the cut.
Britain's top-ranked player Bronte Law, 24, finished her opening round on a two-under-par 70.
Hull says she has been "playing well all year" but has been "struggling" with "trusting" herself.
"The last hole was playing tricky into the wind, so I'm pleased," Hull told BBC Sport after her birdie on the 18th.
"I haven't played too much on this course and only played nine holes yesterday. I'm not expecting too much, just going out there and having fun.
"Today I trusted myself and feel I'm in a good mindset this week."
