Six-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan extended his lead to 11-5 over Stephen Maguire in their World Championship quarter-final.
Trailing 6-2 from the morning, Maguire began the evening brightly with breaks of 62 and 73 to get back to 6-4.
But the world number one responded in style with runs of 64, 55, 69, 94 and 73 to reassert his authority before the Scot took the evening's final frame.
It leaves O'Sullivan two frames away from a 13th Crucible semi-final.
In the evening's other last-eight match China's Yan Bingtao fought back superbly from 6-2 down against Mark Williams to go into Wednesday's deciding session level at 8-8.
The 2021 Masters champion engineered a five-ball plant on the way to winning the evening's opening frame and knocked in breaks of 80, 72 and 103 to take four of the first five as the previously fluent Welshman struggled to find his rhythm after several lengthy safety exchanges.
Yan also won a protracted 14th frame lasting 50 minutes, which saw a re-rack and an unscheduled stoppage to allow Williams a toilet break, to draw level.
And he took a scrappy 15th before Williams won a nervy final frame to leave the match delicately poised.
O'Sullivan storms ahead
Having been outplayed during the early session on Tuesday, Scotland's Maguire faced the unenviable position of trying to reduce a four-frame deficit against a player he last defeated in 2012 at the China Open.
And at times the former UK Champion did not help himself. Some errant positional play and loose potting provided O'Sullivan with plenty of opportunities to pull clear, with Maguire's woes underlined by a poorly laid snooker attempt in the 11th frame and running out of position when well placed in the 13th frame.
By then O'Sullivan, who is chasing a record-equalling seventh Crucible crown in the modern era, had warmed to his task despite repeatedly appearing frustrated by his cue tip.
His 94 to win the 14th frame was a wonderful exhibition of cue-ball control and spectacular potting and, barring an extraordinary turnaround, he will expect to advance to the last four when play resumes on Wednesday morning (10:00 BST).
Higgins and Trump eke out leads
Earlier, four-time world champion John Higgins eked out a 5-3 lead against Jack Lisowski in an error-strewn opening to their quarter-final.
Lisowski opened with a break of 98 and Higgins made 91 and 67 but both players generally struggled for rhythm and were guilty of some uncharacteristic misses.
Meanwhile, Judd Trump leads Stuart Bingham 5-3 with both of the former winners in fine touch as they compiled two half-centuries and a century in a high-quality affair.
Trump, who won the title in 2019, looked set to pull clear when he made breaks of 50 and 75 to lead 4-2 but 2015 winner Bingham showed his resolve with a superb 106.
However, Trump won a prolonged eighth frame to ensure a two-frame advantage overnight.
