The New York Yankees notched their third win against the Boston Red Sox in the past week on Saturday, coming from behind in the late stages to improve their seasonal record against their biggest rivals to 3-9.
The Yankees failed throughout the afternoon to get anything going against Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi. It wasn't until the Yankees had two outs in the top of the eighth inning that they were able to plate a run against Eovaldi, reducing their deficit to 3-1.
The Yankees were subsequently able to scorch former teammate Adam Ottavino, with Rougned Odor tying the game at 3-3 with a two-RBI double. Odor scored the go-ahead run on a Gleyber Torres single.
Eovaldi, for his part, finished the afternoon having allowed two runs (both earned) in 7 2/3 innings of work. He struck out eight batters, walked none, and yielded seven hits. New York's Jameson Taillon, meanwhile, permitted one earned run (and three total) over his own seven innings of work. He punched out four but walked three and conceded four hits.
The Yankees' half of the ninth inning featured an embarrassing baserunning mistake on catcher Rob Brantly's part. He appeared to forget how many outs there, running freely on a DJ LeMahieu flyout that resulted in an inning-ending double play. Fortunately, for the Yankees, Brantly's error did not come back to bite them.
The Yankees entered Saturday with a 50-46 record on the season, placing them some nine games back in the American League East and 4 1/2 back of the American League wild card. The win moves the Yankees to eight games behind the first-place Red Sox with Sunday's game to go.
It's worth noting that the Yankees still have three games to play against the Tampa Bay Rays ahead of Friday's trade deadline. The Rays came into the day with an eight-game lead over the Yankees for second place in the division.
